Expectations

Expectations, we all have them, students, athletes, parents and coaches. Some athletes have grand expectations, while some are less grandiose. Can you wrap your head around your expectations? Is it to run in division 1 track in college? Is it to run at state? Is it to get in better shape for another sport? Maybe it is to hangout with your friends and see what track is all about. Whatever your expectations are for the upcoming track season, there are no right or wrong answers as long as your expectations are not counter productive to the team’s expectations as a whole. It must fit into the framework established by the coaches.
What are the Coaches expectations for the athletes, parents and the team?
- We expect the team will follow the rules established by the state, district, school and coaches.
- We expect they will have fun with their friends and develop new friendships.
- We expect athletes of all abilities will be coming out for track and field.
- We expect to have one of the largest track teams in the state of Kansas.
- We expect that our athletes want to be out for track and field and therefore, will work while at practice and meets.
- We expect athletes to be on time to practice.
- We expect athletes will be at all to practices unless they have been excused.
- We expect athletes to come dressed appropriately for practice. We will practice everyday no matter what the weather is doing.
- We expect, since this is track season, that track will be your priority over club sports.
- We expect the athletes to complete the workout prescribed. Not to lose count of laps, hide in the crowd or get lost in visiting with their friends.
- We expect the athletes to do as they are asked to do. Whether that means a workout at 50% of maximum ability or 100% of maximum ability.
What YOU can expect:
- You can expect that we, the coaches, will train every athlete whether they are the biggest point scorer on the team or someone new to track and field.
- You can expect dedication from the coaching staff.
- You can expect to have practice or a meet every weekday throughout the season. (And an occasional Saturday practice.)
- You can expect the term mandatory means mandatory.
- You can expect us to practice whether it is raining, snowing, sleeting, freezing or 100 degrees. Dress accordingly, you need to have a “locker” of clothes in your car or in your workout bag so that you can dress appropriately and thus focus on your workout and not how cold you are.
- You can expect practice to last as long as it takes to complete a workout. It is not a 3:00-4:30 or 5:00 practice. When the prescribed workout is complete practice will be over.
- You can expect all athletes will compete in meets every week-either a varsity or junior varsity meet.
- You can expect the first time trial determining the initial varsity team will be held prior to spring break. Time trials will occur according to events and will be held over several days.
- You can expect that it is possible to move from Junior Varsity to Varsity and from Varsity to Junior Varsity. Although, times and distances are a primary factor, work effort, consistency, injuries and coaches’ discretion play a role as well.
WE are all expecting a wonderful year…
